Upper Meadow River, WV, 9/27/09

Because of the heavy constant rain the Gauley River below the Meadow confluance was over 6000cfs and not safe for us to paddle. John Kobak took his Keel-Hauler Canoe Club on a real 4-wheeling shuttle to the Upper Meadow River for a wonderful run. The weather became sunny as we put on. No one in the club had paddled this in many years so Kevin Shipley, Tim Gill, & I took turns being the probe. We came to The Wier, which is a waterfall on the left and a curving stairstep into an undercut on the right. John scouted and directed me to the exact boof line for brief flight into space. I had followed John into more dangerous places than that. Reading water was the most fun for me today. Kevin & I executed some major hole escapes in our creek boats. What a wonderful way to end my great month of long weekends in West Virginia!!! Great run everyone, see you next fall for Gauley Season!!! /hugh
