Hooker Falls, Dupont State Forest, NC Kayaking

3/3/2007
Today Susan & I drove up to the Dupont State Forest near Hendersonville. Wesley had scouted the Little River from where it went over Triple Falls to the area below Hooker Falls. He had contacted Dan yesterday and wanted someone to go down with him. Susan & I arrived first followed soon thereafter by Dan & Andrew. We all scouted the river and when Wesley came he also scouted it. Because of trees down in the river we had to start at the bridge. The rocks were trecherous & soon Dan was hurt & had to stay behind. I got way ahead and decided to go on over Hooker Falls alone. It was a great ride. It is listed as an eleven foot ledge (falls) but seemed higher coming down (my boat is 8' long, judge for yourself!). I went completely underwater but never hit bottom. I carried up and came down again by myself. At the top the third time I met Andrew and Wesley and led them down for my third descent. I would have liked to have gone down more but the carry up was brutal. It was a beautiful warm day and we couldn't have spent it better! /hugh
