5/28/05 Tyger River with Marty Bull

Last weekend Trey was home for his friend Scott Phillips' wedding. Marty Bull was also in the wedding. It's safe to say that Marty is Trey's best Spartanburg friend from childhood. Trey, Marty, & I practiced rolling in our lake on Sunday and Marty & I made plans to paddle the Tyger River this weekend. I worked in the hospital teaching and when I got off I called Marty. He had driven up from Charleston where he lives last night. I had him watch the river self rescue video and then we headed to southern Spartanbrug County. We got on the river and were a little disappointed in the low water level. It even rained a little on us early on. Well, it didn't stop us from having a great river adventure. I had the true pleasure of introducing Marty to this absolutely beautiful river and to whitewater paddling. We tested Marty's roll early on and it did the job. We surfed, did eddy turns, did peel outs and ferries, and rolled in the rapids. Marty, any idea where we can find a great river adventure for next week? /hugh

We practice rolling with dive masks as I insist on the "watch the paddle blade" method
