Radio Control Car Racing, 1992 to 1994

In 1991 Trey and I visited the World Hobbies radio control car race track in Berea, SC and knew this was a hobby for us. For Christmas Trey got a California Flyer by Bolink and we started building our first car. The track was a banked concrete oval in a closed supermarket. Bob Pittman owned World Hobbies and what a great place to go on Friday nights. We had our own pit space that we furnished and decorated. We became masters at traninig 6-cell and 7-cell sub-C NICAD battery packs, remagnetizing ROAR-91 motors, setting up camber and caster, wing geometry, and the myriad of other aspects of race car design and control. Our first cars were 1/6 scale Winston Cup Bolink cars that I would build and Trey would paint and decal. We moved up to Lynx cars for more speed and then to other types of cars. We ran an off-road class of car with sports car prototype bodies and also the zippy little Diggers that we modified legally and illegally. Trey raced at first. then I joined in, and then David Gentry joined our team. One night we got 8 medals and trophies. Eventually Trey became more interested in real cars and dating and I raced till late 1994 and we never went back. What a great father and son hobby. You can see why the Lionel trains eventually were pushed aside./hugh
